I am not reinventing the wheel here by suggesting that you eat oatmeal. I am simply offering a sweet and salty approach to this traditional weekday breakfast favorite that I created this morning and thought it tasted rather nice!
I am really into always having sunflower seeds on hand right now because they add a nice nutty flavor and crunch to salads, yogurt, cereal and pastas. Also, pears are great fruits to start your day with because they are packed full of fiber, antioxidants and vitamins. They also have a low glycemic index which contributes to controlled blood sugar levels throughout the day.
What will you need?
3/4 cup rolled oats
1 cup water
1/2 cup milk (cows, soy, almond)
1/2 pear, sliced
1.5 tbsp sunflower seeds (I used honey roasted)
1 tsp brown sugar or honey
A pinch of cinnamon
How do you make it?
In a medium saucepan, combine your oats, water and milk. Cook on medium heat until done, stirring constantly for about 3 minutes.
Remove from the heat and continue preparing your toppings.
Assemble your oatmeal as shown below. You can use honey if you don’t want to use brown sugar. Also, I like to add some milk to cool it down a bit! Mmmm. Creamy, salty and sweet all at the same time. Not to mention, oatmeal is always a power-packed way to start off your busy day!
