I think maturing is overrated. In fact, I’d go so far as to say I deliberately resist maturing in most aspects of my life wherever possible because guess what? Super mature people are kind of boring and definitely don’t have as much fun. One aspect that I am certainly glad to say HAS matured is my taste in chocolate.
If you are a female, you can understand why this is ridiculously important.
See as a kid, I always opted for “milk chocolate” everything. I liked my chocolate to be cluttered with extra sugar, cream, caramel, nuts… you name it! I liked all chocolate as long as it wasn’t “dark chocolate” because it seemed too healthy. As I got older, I started experimenting with trying different chocolates and luckily realized that true dark chocolate tastes way better than anything else! It tastes real and clean and now it’s the other candy bars that taste cluttered, fake and dare I say it?! Kind of gross.
The experts agree with eating dark chocolate instead of milk. In fact, a lot of scientists and doctors (the cool ones) will say that eating a bit of dark chocolate every day is good for us! So long as it is 60% cocoa or greater, you’re good to go.
My favorite dark chocolate treat right now comes from a company called Alter Eco. I discovered Alter Eco first because I buy their quinoa products, but I started buying all of their other products, too, because they are an amazing company. Alter Eco was founded on the premise that whole, healthy, delicious food can make life better for people all over the world. They work with small-scale farmers all over the world who grow their quinoa, rice, sugar and chocolate, and then they help them to institute Fair Trade and Organic practices.
I am clearly currently obsessed with their Dark Quinoa bar, which they call an “artisan update on a nostalgic childhood treat”. I think they’re talking about a Nestle Crunch bar, but I forgot those even existed the moment I bit into this candy bar.
First of all, the taste and texture are lovable. The quinoa crisps are perfectly mixed in with smooth, dark chocolate and the vanilla balances it out perfectly with a hint of sweetness. You would think this chocolate bar might taste a bit earthy, but it doesn’t at all. Like all of Alter Eco’s products, it contains all 100% Organic and Fair Trade Certified ingredients. The website even tells you the country of origin! This one comes from Ecuador.
To all of this, I say hell yes.
You can find artisan, ethical chocolates like this at a lot of small, neighborhood co-ops or stores like Whole Foods. Please consider expanding your horizons and pick one up next time you’re at the store with a bit of a sweet tooth. Also, check out Alter Eco’s website and their other products, too!
