It is a romantic and charming time of the year here in Minnesota, as the leaves turn colorful and the breeze gets cooler. We’re starting to dust off our winter jackets and pull out the cute chunky scarves, leather boots, spiced teas and warm smart-wool socks. Snuggling under fuzzy blankets with friends and lovers is how I’ve been spending my time a lot more lately and I can hardly think of anything that I would rather do most nights.
There’s a lot to love about the turn of the season here in this fine city. Here are some of my current favorites.
1. The leaves.
See picture above… and enough said. The colors here in fall are out of this world and you can’t really walk anywhere outside without being in complete awe of the beauty. This picture was taken at Gold Medal Park, an urban green space that’s right along the river downtown Minneapolis and one of my favorite places to spend time.
2. A blueberry-spinach smoothie for breakfast.
Normally I am pretty stubborn and always like to have eggs for breakfast, but lately that hasn’t been the case. I discovered that my roommate has this amazing little hand-held, Cuisinart smoothie maker that is perfect for when you’re making a smoothie for one. Every night, I fill it to the brim with raw spinach and almond milk and put it in the fridge overnight. In the morning, when I only have about 5 minutes on my way out the door to work, I throw in some frozen blueberries and chopped banana and twist to blend . By the time I put on the last of my mascara and a cute pair of heels, my smoothie is blended and all ready to go. Only thing left to do is twist on the top and remember to always keep a toothbrush at my desk! The spinach will def get caught in your teeth
3. Working out outside with hand weights.
I can tell that our time left to spend outside is fleeting and pretty soon it’s going to be so cold that the mere thought of exposing any skin sends chills down your spine. Instead of spending time inside at the gym, I like to take my workout outside whenever possible and enjoy the fresh air while it lasts. Grab a couple of 2-pound hand weights and lace up your nikes. Going for a run or a brisk walk while pumping your arms – it’s guaranteed to get your heart thumping and your arms burning for sure.
4. Homemade applesauce.
Mmmmm… has anyone else explored an apple orchard yet this year? Or maybe you just love apple season because of the spiced ciders and caramel dipping sauce? Either way, there is no doubt that apples are absolutely at their best right now. I like to make homemade applesauce and eat it while it’s still warm as dessert on a chilly fall evening.
Here’s the thing – it is so ridiculously easy to make that it isn’t even fair. All you need to do is chop up some apples and simmer them in a cast-iron pan until they get soft. No joke! I also like to add in some cinnamon, sea salt, lemon juice or raisins to make things a bit more interesting. No additional sugar required! The sweetness of the apples themselves is plenty.
5.) Suja Juice
If you haven’t discovered this wonder drink yet, I highly recommend that you give it a try. Yes, it is ridiculously expensive at about $8 for each bottle… there is no denying that. But look at the list of ingredients! Everything is organic and non-GMO… aka worth the higher price. And every once in a while, they advertise right here on my site for $2 off any bottle at Whole Foods. You can also check out more about the company and the different products that they sell here.
I only treat myself to one of these juices when it is a special occasion, like after a 5-mile run or when I am having a stressful day. Look at that color!!!!
6. My new homemade jewelry hanger.
Yup! It’s a beauty, and it took me all of 10 minutes to make. My dad has a huge collection of old barn wood and a ton of old nails that I just pounded into the board. The hardest part of this whole process was figuring out how to hang it on my wall! And even so, my crafty roommate ended up doing most of the work for me
So there’s that! Six things that I am particularly fond of right now. Hopefully something on the list gave you some inspiration for the fall, too.
Have a great start to the week, everybody!
